A Lovey Dovey Day

Apr. 10th, 2008 | 09:35 am
location: work
mood: moody moody
music: whatever's on the boss's soft rock radio

There's a musical artist, Brett Dennen, who is new to me.
(His site mentions Mason Jennings, who wrote and performs another song I really love - "Be Here Now.")
Lyrics to Brett Dennen's "All We Have":

All we have is love...

Oh, we're growing, faster than we ever could have dreamed
And our bellies are bulging,
We're gonna burst right through our seams
It's got us all in competition for wealth and recognition
Globalization I say's a contradiction, for
We can't keep paving over this world we won't all fit in

And all that we have is hope and love
So don't you worry child
Don't you worry bout a thing in the none
But those can lift us up
So we can rise above
So we can rise above
And all that we have is hope and love
So don't you worry child
Don't you worry bout a thing in the none
But those can lift us up
So we can rise above
So we can rise above
the madness

And there's enough wealth for everyone
But some have most and most have some
And there's enough food for us all to flourish
Tell me why are so many malnourished
Say there's weakness in an empty pocket
No and I'll tell you there's weakness in an empty heart
And you say there's strength in the power to control
And I say no, there's strength in only love and compassion

And all that we have is hope and love
So don't you worry child
Don't you worry bout a thing in the none
But those can lift us up
So we can rise above
So we can rise above
And all that we have is hope and love
So don't you worry child
Don't you worry bout a thing in the none
But those can lift us up
So we can rise above
So we can rise above
the madness

Soon we'll find our own way home
Cause we all need a little healin' sometimes
Soon we'll find our own way home
Cause we all need a little healin sometimes
So give love it's the only thing that heals you
Come on sisters
Give it to your brothers
So give love it's the only thing that heals you
Cause we all need a little healin'
So give love it's the only thing that heals you
Come on brothers
Give it to your sisters
So give love it's the only thing that heals you
Cause we all need a little healin'

And I can rest assured you love will always cure you
No matter what the sickness is
No matter what hurts you

And if you give it I have learned it will all be returned
If you only give love
If you only just give your love

Writer's Block: Work & Self-Worth

Does your current occupation affect your self-worth?

Holy crap yes!  This is a very apropos question for somebody who hasn't ever written an LJ and keeps it around to harass people who don't blog her/my style (xanga!).

My job is a means to an end.  I work at a university so that I can get a free master's degree (minus books, of course).
I am a secretary.  Well, an Administrative Assistant, which amounts to the same thing.  I don't mind the work I do - almost at all - but I need more to do to keep me busy.
Recently I went to a Faculty/Staff meeting where we discussed the business school's accreditation.  Apparently we need more measures to prove our effectiveness.  One area we are measuring is writing, and it appears that our students are deficient.  I'm in a class called Composition Theory where we're discussing things like First Year Composition, Writing Across the Curriculum, What Makes a Skilled Writer, What Should These Courses Teach, etc.  So I jumped on the crappy business students' writing really quickly and told the dean that I'm willing to help out in any way.  Hopefully this new bit of zeal will help me stick it out another year.
In other news and in the other half of my job, I'm an Editorial Assistant for a really boring, dry academic journal for finance and economics.  We'll soon be switching from an internal, paper-crazy system of filing and communicating to a central one that will rely on a single Internet application.  I was trained on it yesterday and will have to spend some time training my boss and convincing him to get over his differences with a co-editor and get this show on the road.  I'm rarin' to go!
Every time I stay at a job for more than a few months and really learn the ins and outs, I get bored.  I want do do more.  I've been here over two years now and am proud that I'm only now getting incredibly itchy.  :-)
